Setting Up a Network for a Small Office

Setting up a network for a small office is significantly more complex than setting up a home WiFi router. An office network must be secure, capable of handling heavy simultaneous usage, and designed to minimize downtime.

Wired vs. Wireless

While WiFi is convenient, wired Ethernet connections (Cat6 cables) are still king for office networking. You should always hardwire desktop computers, printers, servers, and CCTV cameras. Wired connections provide maximum speed and absolute stability without interference. Reserve WiFi for laptops, smartphones, and guest access.

The Core Hardware

• The Router: Do not rely on the free router provided by your ISP. A commercial-grade router can handle far more simultaneous connections and offers advanced firewall protections.
• Network Switches: Since you will be hardwiring multiple devices, you will need a switch (e.g., a 16-port or 24-port Gigabit switch) to connect everything together on the local network.
• Access Points (APs): If your office is large, a single router won't provide enough WiFi coverage. You need dedicated Wireless Access Points distributed across the ceiling to ensure strong signals everywhere.

Security Considerations

Your office network holds valuable business data. Ensure you set up a separate "Guest Network" for visitors so they cannot access your internal files or printers. Additionally, invest in a strong hardware firewall to prevent external cyber threats.
