Dome vs Bullet CCTV Cameras: What's the Difference?

When you start looking into CCTV systems, you'll immediately notice that the vast majority of security cameras come in two distinct shapes: Dome and Bullet. While both types serve the same primary function—recording video for security—their unique designs make them suited for very different environments.

Bullet Cameras: The Visible Deterrent

Bullet cameras are cylindrical and stick out like a small barrel. They are the classic image of a security camera.

• High Visibility: Their prominent shape makes them highly visible. This acts as a strong psychological deterrent to potential intruders.
• Long Range: Bullet cameras often have larger lenses, allowing them to view further distances, making them ideal for long driveways, parking lots, or large backyards.
• Easy Installation: They are generally easier to install and reposition. If you need to change the angle slightly after installation, it's usually just a matter of adjusting the mounting arm.

Dome Cameras: Discreet and Vandal-Resistant

Dome cameras are circular, dome-shaped cameras that are typically mounted flat against a ceiling or under an eave.

• Discreet Appearance: They blend in much better with their surroundings, making them popular for retail stores, offices, and indoor home use.
• Vandal Resistance: The camera lens is protected by a tough outer dome. This makes it difficult for vandals to smash the lens or physically turn the camera to point in a different direction.
• Directional Uncertainty: Because of the tinted dome cover on many models, it is very difficult for a person to see exactly which way the camera lens is pointing, increasing their deterrent factor in open spaces.

Which One Should You Choose?

In most professional installations, you will actually use a mix of both. You might use Bullet cameras outside to monitor the perimeter and act as an obvious warning, while using Dome cameras indoors where aesthetics and vandal-resistance are more important.
